Action Report

Week of July 18-22

This week's events: student debt relief programs expansion, #NoNewLeases letter, 988, student debt stories.

  • Policy efforts:
    • PSLF/IDR expansion: We signed a letter along with 130+ other orgs calling on Biden and the Dept. of Ed to expand and extend temporary fixes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Income-Driven Repayment programs, to ensure as many student borrowers receive relief from these programs as possible.
    • Fossil fuel leasing: We worked with House and Senate offices to garner support for a Congressional sign-on letter demanding Biden and Dept. of Interior Secretary Haaland cancel new onshore oil and gas leases and release an offshore 5-year plan with no new fossil fuel leases.
    • 988 hotline launch: With the launch of the new crisis hotline for mental health emergencies, we joined a briefing with the White House and partners to uplift and share info on the newly shortened number.
  • Advocacy:
    • With the end of the pause on student loan payments looming and no word from the White House yet on cancellation, we're re-upping our campaign to collect stories on how the pause on student loan payments has benefitted our members. Share your story here.
